If you haven’t gotten a COLA button yet and want to show your support, write to us at slc.aaup@gmail.com and we’ll arrange to get it to you. It’s been confirmed that the Board-approved compensation policy not only excludes guest faculty, it fails to establish a floor (or minimum) salary for individuals in each of the tenure-line tiers. For these reasons, the COLA for All campaign continues.
Update: March 31, 2024 The topic of processes for academic policy was introduced for preliminary discussion at the March 19 faculty meeting with the questions below. General Committee has asked for input on these questions. Please consider writing to General Committee before their meeting this week (Thursday, April 4) with your thoughts.
1. Our bylaws state that faculty have the power to “determine and implement educational policy.” But they say very little about what counts as “educational policy.” Members of General Committee feel a bylaw may be needed to clarify these ambiguities. How should we define educational or academic policy?
2. The bylaws also state that “Committees may request the General Committee to refer to the faculty for action regarding any statements of policy, principles or other matters of general concern” and that “All faculty members… shall be eligible to vote on issues before the faculty.” But they do not specify which changes (apart from amendments) must be brought to the faculty. Which educational policy changes ought committees refer to the full faculty for deliberation and vote?

Academic Freedom in Hostile Times: A Chat with AAUP https://youtu.be/tEjXmcWtctw?si=UIuVTYYNUDxLWQ0B As academics and onlookers know, higher education has been facing an onslaught of attacks and interference from various forces. This hostility toward free thought and free expression impacts us all. The Authors Guild invites you to a discussion with Michael DeCesare of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) to discuss the importance of the organization’s work to protect academic freedom for all academic professionals. Moderated by author and law professor Richard Thompson Ford, this webinar will explain the AAUP and its policy standards described in its widely known “Redbook.” DeCesare will address the relationships between academic freedom, tenure, and shared governance (the participation of faculty members in school policymaking).
